Why are there no female Minions? Because Minions are 'dumb and stupid'

To Despicable Me and Minions creator Pierre Coffin, it wouldn't make sense to have female Minions.

Coffin, who also voices the yellow gibberish-speaking henchmen, recently explained why he excluded female Minions from his popular animated films.

“Seeing how dumb and stupid they often are, I just couldn’t imagine Minions being girls,” the French director told The Wrap.

Leaving the Minions without female counterparts has raised one big question — how did we get so many of them?

According to The Wrap, one possible explanation is that humans are turned into Minions by a Minonizer, a ray gun that turns humans into Minions. The Minionizer is featured in Universal Studios' Despicable Me: Minion Adventure attraction.

The other, more plausible explanation is cloning. The idea of cloning Minions was introduced in the Despicable Me short films.

Minions has raked in over S$849 million since opening on June 18 and is currently the fourth biggest film of 2015. It features the voices of Sandra Bullock, Michael Keaton, Jon Hamm and Allison Janney.
