Bike accident won't stop him from riding

It was his second motorcycle accident in four years, and he is thankful that he suffered only minor injuries both times.

Despite the accidents, Mr Khairul Anwar Mohammad is not giving up his bike anytime soon.

"I will continue riding as it is my preferred mode of transportation," he told The New Paper yesterday.

His latest accident took place on Whitley Road on Tuesday morning.

And judging from video footage of the crash, Mr Khairul Anwar, 26, is very lucky to have escaped serious injuries or even death in the accident that involved multiple vehicles.

The sales and marketing analyst, who lives in Woodlands and is single, said he was riding his 400cc Honda motorcycle to his workplace in the city when a car from the opposite direction suddenly mounted a road divider and slammed into him.

He said: "I saw the car coming towards me. I didn't even have time to think and it hit the front of my bike."

The three-minute video clip, posted by a motorist, showed Mr Khairul Anwar riding his bike beside a bus near a Caltex petrol station when the silver car careened into him before crashing into the bus.

The motorcyclist fell onto the road and was seen trying to lift himself up, but failed. Several vehicles in the area then came to a sudden standstill.

A few seconds later, he was seen lying still on his side before the bus passengers rushed down to help him.

Said Mr Khairul Anwar: "I blacked out for a few seconds and was in terrible pain when I regained consciousness, still lying on the road.

"Somebody must have alerted the authorities because an ambulance soon took me to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH)."

The police said they were notified of the incident at about 8.10am. The victim was conscious when he was taken to TTSH.

Mr Khairul Anwar, who suffered injuries including swollen ankles and abrasions, was discharged later that day. He was given five days of medical leave and is now resting at home.

He told TNP that he obtained his motorcycle licence in 2007 and considers himself a careful rider.

He was involved in his first accident in 2011 when a car sideswiped him while he was riding on the Tampines Expressway.

Like the latest incident, he escaped with minor injuries and was given four days of medical leave.

He said: "I'm thankful that I did not suffer any serious injuries in Tuesday's accident. Hari Raya is coming soon, and I hope I can recover in time for the festivities."
