Worried that his mother was suffering from breathing difficulties, student Nicholas Whey, 21, called for an ambulance to take her to the hospital.
But on the way to the hospital, the ambulance was delayed by an inconsiderate driver in a Hyundai Matrix, who refused to give way for five minutes despite the blaring siren of the ambulance.
By the time they arrived at the hospital, Madam Whey's condition had deteriorated so much that she had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Mr Whey took a video of the incident and shared it with The New Paper, and his story was published last Thursday. The video, which was later posted on TNP's Facebook page, went on to attract more than 1,500 likes and has been shared over 2,000 times.
Mr Whey, who reads TNP two or three times a week, said he called to share his story because he believed that it would have a broadcast effect, and that the public should be notified of the incident.
He said the article was well-written, and was pleased by the attention it received on social media.
"I saw the number of 'likes' that the post generated on Facebook, and I'm glad that it reached as many people as it did," he added.
UNUSUAL
Mr Robert Lim, 63, was another hotline caller whose report we published.
He called TNP after noticing an unusual sight at Bedok Reservoir last Monday around 7am, when he went for his daily jog.
The area looked like it had been hit by a typhoon - many of the trees there were either uprooted or had snapped at the trunks.
Mr Lim, who lives in Tampines, told TNP that this was the result of a violent storm the day before.
He said he called TNP because he believes that the paper is experienced in reporting news of this nature.
"I thought that TNP would respond positively to these types of breaking news," the retiree added.
His tip-off resulted in the story being published in last Tuesday's edition.
Mr Lim also said that he learnt additional facts about the incident from the article. "The article included how fast the winds were at the time. I never knew that the winds here could be so fast," he said.
For their tip-offs, these readers will each receive a $100 Pizza Hut voucher.
