Protesters on the streets after police shot another black teen in US city of St Louis
Just two months after a policeman fatally shot Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, an off-duty St. Louis city policeman has shot and killed a suspect.
The teen allegedly fired on police yesterday (Thursday afternoon local time).
Police chief Sam Dotson said the victim was 18 years old.
The officer was in a car when he saw three men. When all three ran, the officer followed them in his car, then chased them on foot.
The teenager had a gun and reportedly fired at least three shots at the officer, who returned fire.
When the teenager tried to fire again, his gun jammed, said Dotson.
The officer fired 17 times. It was unclear how many times the teenager was shot.
The teen's family members said his name is Vonderrit Myers. The incident triggered a demonstration, with hundreds of people taking to the streets just 20km from where Michael Brown was shot
At one point, roughly a dozen people punched and kicked two occupied police vehicles, one marked and another was unmarked..
The 32-year-old officer was working for a security company but wearing his city police uniform.
He was said to have attempted to stop a suspect who then fled on foot, said St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Schron Jackson.
The suspect turned and fired at the pursuing officer, who returned fire and fatally wounded him, said the police.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave.
