RP introduces candidates for West Coast and Radin Mas
RP chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam happy with new candidates, says there were more
The Reform Party (RP) is the first opposition party to put faces to the wards it is contesting this General Election.
Yesterday, the party introduced its candidates contesting the West Coast group representation constituency (GRC) and Radin Mas single-member constituency (SMC).
Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam, 56, the party's secretary-general, leads the West Coast GRC team.
On the party's candidates, he said: "We want people with pure heart who want to serve the people of Singapore. We are very happy with the quality of our candidates.
"We have many people who wanted to be candidates who did not make the cut."
First-time candidate Darren Soh, 45, grew up in a one-room flat and studied in neighbourhood schools.
The real estate firm manager said he first became active in grassroots work at age 25. The father of an 18-year-old boy said he was contesting for his son's generation.
"I want to be a voice for them. As a grassroots leader, you still can't represent them. You have to be an MP to bring about change."
Miss Noraini Yunus, 47, a customer service executive, joined the party this month.
She was with the Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS) in 2006 and the National Solidarity Party in 2011 when she contested Jurong GRC. In 2013 she was with the Democratic Progressive Party.
She said: "If you see me moving from one party to another, it is because I believe serving them doesn't limit me to just one party."
RP chairman Andy Zhu, 32, a property agent, was in the party's West Coast GRC team in 2011.
In Radin Mas SMC, Mr Kumar Appavoo, 46, a director in an oil and gas company, will face off against the People's Action Party's incumbent MP, Mr Sam Tan.
"As a grassroots leader, you still can't represent them. You have to be an MP to bring about change."
