Telcos to end 2G services in 2017

Singtel, M1 and StarHub will stop providing 2G services from April 1, 2017 onwards.

The past few years have seen a decline in the number of 2G subscribers. In June 2011, there were over 2 million people subscribed to 2G networks, but that has dropped to just 250,000 2G subscribers now.

The move will allow the telcos to use the scarce radio frequency spectrum to provide more 3G and 4G services.

2G subscribers who do not wish to subscribe to new service plans can continue with their existing plans at no additional cost once they have migrated to 3G networks.

Those using phones that only support 2G services will have to get their devices changed before April 1, 2017.

In addition, the telcos will be introducing affordable 3G mobile phone packages to ensure a smooth transition for 2G subscribers.
