Traction power fault halts train services along the North-South and East-West lines
Train services along the North-South and East-West lines (NSEWL) came to a halt due to a traction power fault on Tuesday (July 7) evening.
SMRT advised commuters to avoid the NSEWL and take the free bus services that it had provided or other unaffected train services as it rectified the problem.
Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew also took to Facebook to express his concern with the break-down, saying it was the first time both services were affected at the same time.
A reader who was affected by the breakdown said in an e-mail to TNP that she and several others had to walk from Bishan MRT station to Marymount Road in order to take a bus towards Yishun.
A Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesman said in a statement that preliminary investigations indicate that the incident was caused by a power trip.
"Free bus boarding was activated at all stations at around 7.23pm. Bus services were also beefed up," the spokesman said.
"LTA will carry out a full investigation into the cause of this incident. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to commuters."
