Bus, tipper truck crash on MCE injures 28
Eye-witness says the damage was so bad "it no longer looked like a bus"
He was on his way home from work yesterday when he saw injured victims lying on the road along the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) tunnel.
A badly damaged bus and a tipper truck lay just a few metres apart.
The sight of the accident shocked the witness, who wanted to be known only as Mr Aizat.
He was a passenger on his company bus when it passed the scene in slow traffic shortly after the accident, which occurred at 6.20pm.
"The front part of the (damaged) bus was so badly smashed that it no longer looked like a bus," Mr Aizat told The New Paper. "There were a few people, who looked like passengers of the bus, standing at the road shoulder. Some people were even lying on the ground."
The collision involving the private bus, the tipper truck and a lorry happened along the MCE towards East Coast Parkway, after Marina Coastal Drive.
The bus driver was trapped until Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers arrived.
An SCDF spokesman said officers used hydraulic tools to rescue him.
INJURED
A total of 28 casualties, including the bus driver, were taken conscious to Singapore General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Changi General Hospital.
The SCDF spokesman said one fire engine, one Red Rhino, two fire bikes, four ambulances and three support vehicles were sent to the scene.
Investigations are ongoing.
The accident caused a jam on the MCE as some lanes were closed.
Twitter user Dolores Picot posted this picture with a caption that said "Accident in MCE tunnel towards Changi Aiport (sic). Road completely stopped. Avoid it if you can."
