Fined $5,000 for hitting cop over beer
Caught drinking beer in public past midnight, they were ordered by police officers to throw their drinks away.
But beer promoter Siow Hui Lin, 28, and housewife Susan Cheng Hwee Mui, 45, refused.
They continued drinking even after the officers told them about the new law that bans the consumption of alcohol in public after 10.30pm.
Siow got so upset, she hit a policeman and was fined $5,000 yesterday for the offence.
The Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act, which came into effect on April 1 last year, bans the consumption of alcohol in public after 10.30pm.
The women were caught drinking at a hawker centre at Block 75, Lorong 5 Toa Payoh, around 1.30am on May 6 last year.
When Special Constabulary Sergeant (Sgt) Luqman Abdul Manap, 22, and his colleague asked them to stop, they insisted there was no such law.
ANGRY
The women got angry and raised their voices.
They refused to listen even after the officers repeatedly told them to calm down.
They moved in to arrest Cheng for disorderly behaviour.
Siow became aggressive and struggled when the officers tried to arrest her. She swung her hands towards them and one of her arms hit Sgt Luqman on the nose.
He was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where his nose was found to be tender and bruised.
Siow, a Malaysian, was fined $5,000 yesterday after pleading guilty to using criminal force on Sgt Luqman.
One count each of consuming beer in public during the no-drinking period and behaving in a disorderly manner were taken into consideration during sentencing.
For disorderly behaviour and drinking in public, Cheng was given a one-year conditional warning on Jan 15.
For using criminal force on Sgt Luqman, Siow could have been jailed up to four years and fined.
