Last Cathay Cineleisure Orchard attacker sentenced
Last attacker sentenced for 2013 Cathay Cineleisure Orchard slashing
He has been committing violent crimes since he was 15.
Between 2004 and 2010, Mizra Abdul Azman, now 26, committed gang robbery and rioting among other crimes.
He has not learnt his lesson.
While out on bail for attacking a rival gang member at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard in 2013, he slashed another person with a knife.
Yesterday, he was jailed five years and given six strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to rioting with a deadly weapon, being a member of an unlawful society, voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon and using criminal force on a public servant.
Four other charges for similar offences were taken into consideration.
Mizra was part of the group that ganged up on Mr Wilson Siau, then 20 and a full-time national serviceman, at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard at around 9.10pm on June 15, 2013.
In front of stunned passers-by, he used a watermelon knife and slashed Mr Siau, leaving him bleeding profusely.
About a year later, he used a knife to slash club promoter Muhammad Fairuz Abdul Ghani, then 21, at a carpark near Block 830, Woodlands Street 83.
Mizra, who was not represented by a lawyer, was the last to be dealt with in court for his role in the shopping centre slashing.
His eight accomplices had earlier been sentenced to between 2 1/2 years' jail and 3 1/2 years' jail with six strokes of the cane.
Seven of them, who were then between 19 and 21 years old, were members of the same secret society as Mizra.
In early June 2013, one of them, Muhammad Fahmi Razali, now 23, got upset with Mr Mohamad Ashiq Sabtu. He felt the latter had been flirting with his girlfriend on Twitter.
He called Mr Mohamad Ashiq and they agreed to have a "settlement talk" at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard at 8pm on June 15.
Fahmi alerted his fellow gang members and they agreed to teach Mr Mohamad Ashiq a lesson.
Mizra, who was then a part-time mover and an air-conditioner service man, brought the watermelon knife to attack him. But Mr Mohamad Ashiq did not turn up.
The gang members decided to attack any member of a rival secret society instead.
They attacked Mr Siau, who suffered wounds to his scalp and arms.
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Yvonne Poon said Mr Siau's finger tendons were severed and he now has difficulty bending his fingers.
SECOND ATTACK
Mizra was charged in court three days after his arrest. He was out on bail when he attacked fellow gang member, Muhammad Fairuz, at around 12.30am on August 16, 2014.
Another gang member, Ramadhan Mohamad Zambrie, then 25, had stood bail for Muhammad Fairuz. But the latter jumped bail and stopped attending gang activities.
Ramadhan gathered four men and two teenage girls at the carpark of St James Power Station at Sentosa Gateway at around 11pm on August 15, 2014. They beat up Mr Muhammad Fairuz and abducted him in a van.
They drove to the carpark near Block 830, Woodlands Street 83, where Mizra was waiting with a friend.
Mizra entered the van after the rest got out. When his victim grabbed the blade, Mizra pulled the knife back, slicing Muhammad Fairuz's fingers in the process.
DPP Poon said the van was rocking from side to side during the brutal attack.
The court also heard that while Mizra was in remand at Jurong Police Division headquarters on October 28, 2014, he shoved a sergeant and repeatedly spat on his face.
DPP Poon told the court that multiple attempts at rehabilitating Mizra have failed.
