Taxi crashes, swerves and hits pedestrian
Lorry in initial crash veers and slams into parked car, setting off a chain-collision
A collision between a lorry and taxi sparked a chain reaction yesterday morning.
The accident occurred along Serangoon Road, in front of the Central Sikh Temple near Boon Keng MRT station, around 7.15am.
After the initial collision, the impact caused the taxi to swerve, and according to some eyewitnesses, it then hit a female pedestrian aged 22.
Meanwhile, the lorry careened up a pedestrian walkway and into a nearby open-air carpark.
It first slammed into a Toyota Wish, but the impact was so strong that three other cars were also damaged.
Mr Tan, 60, an aquarium shop owner, saw the aftermath of the accident on the way to his shop near the carpark at around 8.15am.
He told The New Paper that his friend owned the Toyota Wish that bore the brunt of the impact.
"The back bumper and lights were hanging out. Both sides of the car were also quite badly damaged. My friend said he plans to scrap the car instead of repairing it because it would be too expensive," he said.
The female pedestrian caught in the unfortunate accident was crossing the road. Eyewitnesses said that the taxi was the one that directly hit the woman.
According to Shin Min Daily News, she was on her way to work with a friend when the accident happened. After she was hit, she had a bleeding nose and torn trousers.
The 22-year-old was sent conscious to Tan Tock Seng hospital with head injuries, along with the 45-year-old male taxi driver.
The male lorry driver, 34, was arrested. TNP understands that the lorry driver, a foreigner, is under investigation for possible drink driving.
HUGE TRAFFIC JAM
Business development manager Gary Haris, 41, was on his way to a meeting in Kaki Bukit when he saw the accident and called TNP's hotline.
"It looked serious, a lot of people were crowding around the area when I passed by. It also caused a huge traffic jam. I left 15 minutes early for my meeting, but because of the jam, I was half-an-hour late," he said.
At lunchtime, the damage from the accident was still visible: An HDB parking signboard was knocked over, with glass fragments and debris from the accident littering the grass patch in front of the carpark.
Two of the damaged cars had already been towed away, while the other two remained at the scene. Although these cars were farthest away from the lorry, the third car that was hit had major dents along the right side of its body. Investigations are ongoing.
