S'pore teen turns to crowdfunding... for uni education
People have been turning to the Internet to fund their dreams.
Need financing for a start-up company? Crowdfund. Want to commercialise a product? Crowdfund. Charitable initiative needs an extra push? Crowdfund.
But one Singaporean teen has started a crowdfunding campaign for a very different reason: To fund her education.
Miss Kimmie Marie Cumming, a 19-year-old dancer who studied at the School of The Arts, has been accepted to the Taipei National University of the Arts, according to her campaign information on Indiegogo.
Her father was retrenched recently, she says, and she cannot afford the fees, so she is hoping to raise US$40,000 (S$50,000) by July 31.
The young dancer includes a video of a performance so that people can see her talent.
The idea of using crowdfunding for education is not new. But it usually benefits a group of people - for example, a campaign to set up learning centres in East Africa, not an individual.
Will her campaign take off? It's still too early to say, but she has raised US$1,159 in two days.
