Movie Review: Boulevard (R21)
The sense of sombreness in this drama is suffocating.
Knowing this is Robin Williams' final on-screen role is bad enough. To see him play a depressed man makes it worse as he suffered from severe depression before committing suicide last year.
Williams is Nolan, a sexually repressed banker whose routine life takes a turn when he impulsively picks up a male prostitute named Leo (Roberto Aguire) while driving down a shady street.
Though Nolan is confused about his feelings towards Leo, there's nothing sexual between them.
When it becomes a dangerous infatuation, Nolan's public life, including the passionless relationship with his wife Joy (Kathy Baker), starts crumbling.
That's when Boulevard becomes predictable, despite Williams' strong, controlled performance.
It's a pity his swansong isn't memorable at all.
