Batam official joins ISIS
A Batam official has deserted his post to join the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Indonesian authorities said on Tuesday (Nov 10).
Mr Dwi Djoko Wiwoho, the director of the island’s one-stop integrated service, had been on leave when he left the country to join the Sunni militant group.
Instead of returning to work on Sept 1, he sent a message to his boss, asking him to tell his parents he had joined ISIS, reported The Jakarta Post.
National Police spokesman Inspector General Anton Charliyan said: "His message was clear. (He said) he would join the jihad and go on a journey."
Mr Dwi and his wife are believed to have made their way to Iraq via Turkey.
Local reports did not state whether the couple had taken their children with them.
The spokesman said the police will investigate what influenced him to join ISIS.
