Church says no, but he'll still go
Mr E. Tam, a Christian, does not feel conflicted about attending Madonna's concert on Sunday.
"I don't approve of some of the things she does, like how she appropriates religious imagery in her concerts, but I appreciate her music and artistry," he told The New Paper.
Mr Tam, who will be watching Madonna live for the first time, signed up as a Madonna fan club member just to buy a pre-sale ticket at $188.
He will attend the gig with friends, including a Christian friend.
The 28-year-old civil servant said he was aware of the Catholic Church and National Council of Churches of Singapore statements urging believers to reconsider attending Madonna's concert, but he felt the issue was "blown out of proportion".
"I don't think the world will end just because her lyrics and actions are controversial," said Mr Tam.
RATED R18
He added: "Her concert here is already going to be censored.
"And since it is rated R18, concertgoers will be mature enough to think for themselves."
Mr Tam was introduced to Madonna in the late 90s through cassette tapes played by his mother, who is Catholic. He became a fan after listening to her 2005 album Confessions On A Dance Floor, dancing to her catchy, upbeat songs.
"My family and Christian friends have not said anything about the concert," he said.
"I received an e-mail from my church sharing the official statement from the Catholic Church, but it did not affect my decision to go.
"And I will still post pictures of the concert on social media because I have nothing to hide.
"To others, it may be unacceptable, but to me, it's just art that presents a different point of view."
