Celebrations in the Citi

Team Citi surge with Chris Chew's brilliant round; Team BOSS's William Tay takes individual honours

Team Citi, buoyed by the successful staging of Citibank's annual corporate golf event earlier in the week, played above themselves to take the top team award at Seletar Country Club on Thursday.

In the third leg of the six-game series of the Business Times Corporate Golf League, Team Citi bagged 110 points (best three stableford scores to count) to edge out Tat Hong-The Crane Boomers on countback for the honour. From a seventh spot after the first leg, Team Citi surged to the second place in the 12-team competitive league with 319 points (100, 109, 110), just five short of leaders Tat Hong, who have 324 points.

A consistent Team Boustead lie third on 317 points, five ahead of Emerio.

Team Citi had to thank their star player and captain Chris Chew (handicap 10.9), who played a superlative two-over 74 on the challenging Seletar layout and amassed 40 points. The 51-year-old, who has a strong all-round game and has been playing golf for three decades, bagged four birdies in his round. He also won the "Nearest the Pin" prize on Hole 11, earning him a Philip Stein sports bracelet.

While everyone was whooping over his brilliant round, like a bolt from the blue came the figure of William Tay (handicap 7.5), of Team BOSS, who amassed 41 points to win the FJ Player of the Round award. It was a timely birthday gift for Tay, who turned 45 on Thursday. He shot a 76, but his five birdies helped him edge past Chew.

Tay's teammate Ivan Chua, who also celebrated his birthday on Thursday, as he turned 46, won the Drive to the Macallan Flag at Hole 17. He used a nine-iron to be just 61cm off the main target.

It was also a big night for Michael Liew of Tat Hong, who bagged the hole-in- one prize at Hole 13, winning a five-night luxury villa stay at a five-bedroom private villa in Canggu, Bali, sponsored by Kemala Villa Bali.

The BT Corporate League, with a host of sponsors, namely presenting sponsor Audi, main sponsor Macallan, and Banyan Tree, Centurion, DHL and Tat Hong, among others, is fast becoming a popular event for corporates and companies, judging by the turnout and feedback.
