Sundram takes over as national coach
V Sundramoorthy was unveiled as the national football coach on Friday (May 27).
The 50-year-old coach, who had led S.League giants Tampines Rovers for the past 17 months, signed a one-year deal.
He is the first local coach since Vincent Subramaniam who coached the team from 1998 to 2000.
PN Sivaji handled the Lions as a caretaker in 2003.
This will be Sundram’s second spell as national team coach.
In 2013, he had a short stint as the Football Association of Singapore hunted for Raddy Avramovic’s replacement.
Suzuki Cup
This time Sundram’s main task this will be the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup, which will be co-hosted by Myanmar and the Philippines in November and December this year.
His first assignment as national coach will be the football quadrangular in Yangon, Myanmar, from June 2 to 4.
Arguably one of Singapore’s most talented footballers, he began his coaching career at now-defunct S.League club Jurong FC as a player-coach.
He then led the Young Lions, before guiding the LionsXII to the Malaysian Super League title in 2013.
He coached Negeri Sembilan in Malaysia for one season, before returning to take over the reins at Tampines.
