Quah siblings to lay off competition for rest of year
Olympic swimming siblings Quah Ting Wen and Zheng Wen will not be putting on their racing suits for the rest of this year.
The duo, who competed at the Rio Olympics in August this year, have opted not to take part in the Singapore National Swimming (short-course) Championships from today to Sunday at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.
Ting Wen, 24, and Zheng Wen, 20, will also skip the Fina World (short-course) Swimming Championships in Canada next week.
"As I'm still reviewing my training plans in preparation for the SEA (South-east Asia) Games 2017 and beyond, I have chosen to not participate in the upcoming (two meets)," said Zheng Wen in a statement.
"I will continue to be training as usual with Gary (Tan, National Training Centre head coach) and the NTC squad and will keep everyone updated on the competitions for next year."
Zheng Wen has not seen action since the Rio Olympics, where he reached the semi-finals of the men's 100m and 200m butterfly events.
At the same Games, teammate Joseph Schooling created history by winning Singapore's first Olympic gold in a Games record of 50.39 seconds.
Similarly, Ting Wen has not competed since Rio, where she raced in the women's 100m fly.
She was recently spotted with her left hand supported in an arm sling, which The New Paper understands is related to a surfing accident in the United States in 2011.
In a statement, she said: "I will not be participating in the upcoming (two meets) for medical reasons, due to an old arm injury."I will be out of the water for the next couple of weeks, and will slowly be easing back into training with Gary and the NTC squad."
