Civil War actors have only praise for each other
Their characters battle it out on Captain America: Civil War, but the actors have only praise for one other
The Avengers may have split up into two teams, with Captain America battling Iron Man in the upcoming Marvel superhero blockbuster Captain America: Civil War.
But the rivalry between the cast members is non-existent off-screen and they are truly one close-knit bunch.
So while the Cap (Chris Evans) may not mind punching Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) when the latter gets under his skin, Evansactually wishes he could play the ingenious billionaire.
"Downey obviously set the bar really high, but Iron Man is such a fun role to play," the 34-year-old US actor told The New Paper (TNP) during a group interview at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre yesterday.
"Tony Stark is gregarious and confident, unlike Captain, who keeps everything close to his vest. I'm more an open book so playing someone akin to Stark will be a nice change."
Evans, along with co-stars Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, and the movie's co-director Joe Russo, were in town to promote Civil War, which opens here next Thursday.
Helmed by Russo and his brother Anthony, the movie sees the Avengers taking sides after some political interference.
Captain America leads his team, comprising Falcon (Mackie), Winter Soldier (Stan), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), against the other superhero squad led by Iron Man, which includes Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Vision (Paul Bettany) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman).
FAMILY
While the movie's publicity campaign had the ensemble cast split into two camps - Team Cap and Team Iron Man - Evans stressed they are all one big happy family.
"We're this family of positive people who are happy to go to work every day," he said.
Added Mackie: "What I love about the Russos is that they gave every character an opportunity to be the lead in the movie. Everyone has their moment.
"The fun comes with the security that you know it's going to be a good movie and that takes the pressure off.
"So we can make fun of each other and have a good time. I've made some lifelong friends. So if they do well, I do well."
Evans in turn credited Mackie for bringing energy and fun to the set.
Indeed, the 37-year-old US actor was the life of the party, even at the press conference held earlier, when he trash-talked his character's rival team, calling Iron Man a "Coca-Cola can", War Machine a "trash can" and Black Panther "Michelin tyres".
Russo, in a separate interview, told TNP that he and Anthony were presented with "an incredible gift" to have a cast with so much camaraderie with each other.
"They all click, so it makes it all easy," said the 45-year-old US film-maker.
The brothers had directed 2014's Captain America: Winter Soldier, and will be helming Avengers: Infinity War - Part I and Part II, which will be released in 2018 and 2019 respectively.
Civil War may not feature two popular Avengers - Hulk and Thor - but it welcomed a new member to the growing clan, and Evans had nothing but praise for 19-year-old British actor Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man.
"He's a kid, but he came in as a professional.
"It must be tough for him to come in as someone new to a set where people have already made multiples movies together," said Evans.
"But hey, if you got to be the new kid and you're no less than (everyone's favourite superhero) Spider-Man, you'll be very welcomed," he added, laughing.
Added Mackie of Holland, who came to prominence with 2012 disaster drama The Impossible: "(Tom) won the lottery to get to play the biggest superhero of all superheroes.
"But he's humble and his level of talent is awesome."
