Ian McKellen: "Being a mutant in X-Men is a metaphor for being an outcast"
Ian McKellen (above) has played Magneto since 1999.
In an interview with The New Paper in London recently, the 74-year-old English actor said his homosexuality helped him play the antagonistic character.
“Being a mutant in the X-Men universe is a metaphor for being an outcast of society; being black, Jewish or gay. That was my ‘in’ to the character (of Magneto), to understand how it felt to be discriminated against," he told reporters in a press interview for the upcoming film X-Men: Days of Future Past at London's Claridge's hotel.
He continued: “Would you rather be born a mutant or a generic? It’s a valid question.”
