Movie Review: Genius (PG)
Based on A. Scott Berg's biography Max Perkins: Editor of Genius, this biopic pays nostalgic homage to one of the greatest novelists in American literature history.
With an A-list cast comprising Jude Law as legendary author Thomas Wolfe and Colin Firth as buttoned-up publisher Maxwell Perkins, director Michael Grandage attempts to recreate the slate grey streets of Manhattan in the 1930s where another literary genius is born.
As a journalist, it is intriguing to see the gruelling editing process that Perkins and Wolfe go through to transform the latter's massive volumes into concise novels. The literary bromance between the two is also touching.
While Genius should attract smarthouse crowds, Law's impression of Wolfe's Carolina drawl and hillbilly act seems overdone at times and the storyline gets a tad dry.
