Movie Review: The Revenant (M18)
The Revenant is breathtakingly serene, yet does not forget that the great outdoors can be immensely savage and unforgiving.
Nominated for 12 Oscars, it will be a big winner at the Feb 29 awards ceremony.
Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki looks set to pick up his third back-to-back Oscar (he previously won for Gravity and Birdman) for shooting the movie entirely in natural light.
Leonardo DiCaprio is also a shoo-in for the Best Actor Oscar. He delivers a tremendous performance as Hugh Glass, a man so determined on taking revenge on his son's murderer that he wills himself to survive after a bear mauling.
It does plod along, but director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has made Glass' plight so riveting you don't really feel the slow pace.
The Revenant is a masterful celebration of human tenacity. Bravo.
