Movie Review: The Songs We Sang (PG)
Remember our last xinyao movie?
That Girl In Pinafore in 2013 was weighed down by melodramatic clichés and cringe-worthy acting.
Thankfully, this excellent documentary directed by local film-maker Eva Tang has none of that.
Instead, it provides an in-depth look into the flowering of xinyao - from tracing the final days of Nantah Poetry Club and the raging emotions of its students as Nanyang University faced imminent closure, to exploring how exuberant xinyao pioneers Eric Moo and Liang Wern Fook changed the music landscape in the 1980s.
Truly a gem of local cinema.
