Jada laughed but LA cops were ready to arrest Will Smith after the slap

More details have emerged about actor Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars on Sunday (March 27).

Newly released video from the audience shows Jada Pinkett Smith laughing after her husband had just committed, on live TV, an offence for which the Los Angeles police were ready to arrest him.

It also appears that Smith at first smiled at Rock’s joke about her hair, and exploded only after she was seen rolling her eyes.

Rock has kept his cool throughout, even shutting down, at his sold out shows in Boston later in the week, a fan who shouted out against Smith.

At Thursday night’s show, an audience member yelled out, "F--- Will Smith!"

Rock responded immediately, saying: "No, no, no, no, no..."

The new video clip, shared by TikTok user @305hoodhero on Thursday, shows the aftermath of the moment Smith, 53, slapped Rock, 57.

The comedian had just compared the 50-year-old Pinkett Smith's close-cropped hair to Demi Moore’s look in G.I.Jane.

Pinkett Smith, who had recently opened up about living with the hair-loss condition alopecia, was visibly unamused, after which Smith walked onstage and assaulted Rock, in full view of those present and a global TV audience.

The clip shows the actor returning to his seat as Rock says: "Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me."

Pinkett Smith seems to laugh at that, but her husband shouts: "Keep my wife's name out of your f---ing mouth."

Rock replies: "Wow, dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke," and Smith repeats what he just said.

Rock then says: "I'm going to, okay?"

Pinkett Smith seems to chuckle when Rock finishes with: "That was the ... greatest night in the history of television."

After handing out an award and leaving the stage, Rock was not filmed again that evening.

Smith made a blubbering apology of sorts as he received an award, before which he was seen being comforted by fellow actors Bradley Cooper, Denzel Washington, and Tyler Perry during a commercial break.

He appeared to be in high spirits at Vanity Fair’s afterparty.

In an interview, the show's producer Will Packer said police officers were prepared to arrest Smith that night.

"They said, we will go get him. We are prepared. We are prepared to get him right now. You can press charges. We can arrest him. They were laying out the options," Packer told ABC News.

"And as they were talking, Chris was ... being very dismissive of those options. He was like, no, I'm fine. He was, like, no, no, no."

Rock attended a more private afterparty with one of the event’s hosts, Wanda Sykes.

She later said he apologised and seemed more concerned about the incident affecting her and fellow hosts Amy Schumer and Regina Hall.

“The first thing he said to me was: ‘I am so sorry. It was supposed to be your night. You and Amy and Regina were doing such a good job. I'm so sorry this is going to be about this,’” she said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday.

“That’s who Chris is.”
