The end of the year is not just about festivities.

It is a time that the awards season rears its head ready to churn out some red carpet fashions dos and dont's.

Glitz and glamour? Here's what caught our eyes at the 22nd Critics' Choice Awards on December 11.

Ryan & Ryan

Despite forgoing the option of a bowtie or any tie, Ryan Gosling looks dapper in Gucci, with the classic fit a perfect complement to his frame. Much better, it has to be said, than the other beloved Ryan (Reynolds not Seacrest) whose odd double-breasted jacket was loose in the midsection, awkwardly tight around the chest and ill-fitting to make one wonder who he had borrowed it from.

Natalie Portman

We've got to give props to Natalie Portman for pulling off florals and red frills on a caped Alexander McQueen dress. How she escapes looking like an upturned flamenco dancer is astounding. It's a feat us mere mortals without stylists should never attempt.

Kate Beckinsale might just fulfill your childhood fairy-tale dreams - especially if you've always wanted to be a punk princess. Clad in a Reem Acra ballgown, the British actress paints a picture of class, complete with a side of pizzazz from the dress's black mesh and splash of sparkles.

If you're one of the ladies who live for pantsuits but not looking to follow Hillary Clinton sartorially, Evan Rachel Wood's outfit will be right up your alley. Suited up in an Altuzarra two-piece, the actress exudes androgynous elegance and exhibits her svelte figure perfectly.

Hailee Steinfeld

While a clash of colours can raise an eyebrow or two, we're happy to report that this Jason Wu piece worn by Hailee Steinfeld is growing on us. After the initial shock of the exploding florist, it receives a tentative thumbs up, for navigating the thin line between messy and tasteful. We're giving Hailee some plus points as well as few could carry off a floral avalanche.

We'd never thought academia checks would make an appearance on the red carpet. It could come off as awkward and dorky yet James Marsden's good looks leave him relatively unscathed from the fashion police. Well, he gets a caution.

Lily Collins went for Victorian gothic chic in her Elie Saab Couture gown. The choice of deep, dark reds on the eyes and lips provides just enough of an edge. This glamorous Bride of Dracula is an unconventional red carpet look, and some would argue against the lace and alabaster skin combination yet it comes through with the right mix of femininity and edginess.
