More female singers are fronting fashion and beauty endorsement campaigns
KATY PERRY
The Brand: Moschino
This must be a Teenage Dream come true for 30-year-old Perry.
The US pop star revealed ecstatically on Instagram last week that she was now "the face of Moschino". Wearing a gold bra, gold-trimmed leather jacket and enough bling to put Jay Z to shame, she also had a shorter, edgier haircut.
Fans clearly approve, as it has garnered over 430,000 likes on Instagram.
Perry was definitely a shoo-in for the job of brand ambassador for the Italian brand. Last year, she walked the runway for Jeremy Scott's Moschino collection during Milan Fashion Week and attended last month's Met Gala dressed head to toe in the label. She even had her manicure spell out the word Moschino. Talk about blatant product placement.
STYLE FACTOR: 8/10
Gone are the days when Perry pranced around in candy-inspired ensembles resembling a giant edible lollipop. In recent years, she has undergone a fashion evolution, but is no less wacky.
Perry's "look at me" style is a perfect fit for the Italian label, whose outfits are anything but subtle and even features crazy pop-culture references to McDonald's, Froot Loops and SpongeBob SquarePants.
ELLIE GOULDING
The Brand: M.A.C
The British singer may be a shy wallflower in real life, but she has unleashed her inner diva to front the US cosmetics brand's holiday collection.
Goulding, 28, now joins the ranks of female musicians Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Cyndi Lauper collaborating with M.A.C.
STYLE FACTOR: 7/10
With her big, blonde hair, sexy cleavage and glossy pink lips, Goulding looks like a hotter (and slimmer) version of Miss Piggy - and we mean that in a good way. We like this va-va-voom alter ego very much indeed.
CIARA
The Brand: Roberto Cavalli
Bringing a little Love Sex Magic to the table, 29-year-old Ciara is now representing the Italian luxury brand.
According to the brand, the campaign tells "the story of a world encapsulated in one room... A surreal kingdom where the walls look like a magical sky and surfaces enchant with desert volumes and earthy hues". As far as we can tell, it looks like Ciara is in a room filled with sand. Very beautifully arranged, but sand nonetheless.
STYLE FACTOR: 9/10
The campaign's description may be airy-fairy, but there is nothing fluffy about the clothing and accessories, which are gorgeous. And Ciara, with her lanky frame and elegant poise, looks like a supermodel who happens to be a singer, rather than the other way round.
WILLOW SMITH
The Brand: Marc Jacobs
Just 14, the daughter of Hollywood actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith already has a resume which trumps most people's. She joins Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis, his son Everly Bear and veteran singer Cher as stars of the US brand's Fall campaign.
Known for her eccentric manner, it is natural that Willow is modelling the more avant garde pieces.
STYLE FACTOR: 7/10
To paraphrase supermodel-host Tyra Banks in US reality series America's Next Top Model, Willow is working that broken doll pose perfectly. If only it looked less creepy, though.
These days, it is not enough to be famous for what you do.
To make the truly big bucks, artists need to front campaigns for fashion and beauty brands too.
Besides being another source of moolah, brand campaigns are also great for fashion cred as this latest crop of female singers can attest to.
And since image is everything, we have ranked them according to how cool they look in their upcoming Fall/Winter campaign ads.
FOXES
The Brand: H&M
Finally, a collection most of us can afford! Swedish high street fashion chain H&M has partnered with Foxes to launch a festival collection, consisting of bomber jackets, miniskirts, slogan tees and jeans. Expect to see revellers wearing them at Glastonbury this year.
"The clothing has tons of character, which means you can really play with the looks, and the best thing is it all still feels like me," the 26-year-old British singer, whose mum runs a vintage store in East London, said.
STYLE FACTOR: 8/10
A quirky personal style can sometimes backfire. I was aghast when Foxes once wore socks with sandals at a BBC Radio performance. Thankfully, she gets it right here, with fun festival-chic outfits and a cheery demeanour to match.
