Hollywood's summer of laughs

Summer 2015 will be jam-packed with blockbusters. Action everywhere. Wall-to-wall fireballs.

Some of these may be unintentionally laughable, but what about the films actually out to hit your funnybone?

Don't worry if you're looking for something more light-hearted.

Here are four comedies you should catch this season if you're thinking of a laughter-based abs workout.

Pitch Perfect 2

Release Date: Out Now

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow and Elizabeth Banks

Why You Should See It:

The first Pitch Perfect was perfectly pitched to catch a wide demographic.

The a capella songs would entice the Glee crowd, those who were dragged along found that it was actually funny.

Now we're getting more - more addictive a capella renditions of famous songs and more Rebel Wilson.

Wilson is reprising her role as fan favourite Fat Amy and if you follow the US chat shows on YouTube, you'll know that Rebel Wilson has been the main spokesman for the film.

The Barden Bellas, led by Anna Kendrick’s Beca suffer a humiliating defeat. To salvage their reputation, they compete in an international singing contest that no US group has won before.

Banks, who was a producer on the first film and no stranger to comedy takes on the directing reigns for this sequel.

Release Date: May 21

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Jude Law and Rose Byrne

Why You Should See It:

This is the third time that director Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy are working together.

The two teamed up for 2011's Bridesmaids and 2013's The Heat.

McCarthy has a particular style and Feig has so far proved he knows how to make best use of her talent.

Hey, Bridesmaids made her a worldwide star.

McCarthy stars as Susan Cooper, a desk-bound CIA analyst who gets to go into the field to infiltrate the inner circle of an arms dealer threatening to cause a global disaster.

Expect a bit of fish-out-of-water comedy. And lots of jokes based on ineptitude and being a plus-size.

To sweeten things, she is joined by Jason Statham (flexing some comedic muscles), Jude Law (as a James Bond wannabe) and Rose Byrne (as the ice-queen villain).

Ted 2

Release Date: July 2

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, Amanda Seyfried, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman

Why You Should See It:

Many loved watching the foul-mouthed teddy bear Ted and his man-child owner/BFF John (Mark Wahlberg) get up to strange antics in 2012's Ted.

Mila Kunis is out, so this time MacFarlane and Wahlberg are joined by Amanda Seyfried, Morgan Freeman and recent addition to the Macfarlane troop, Liam Neeson.

With The Lego Movie, ads for Mobile games and A Million Ways To Die In The West, Neeson seems to be heading for a third career in silliness after his action-renaissance.

Do not go looking for sophistication. Ted 2 promises to be even more immature and absurd than its predecessor. The trailer alone features a spillage at a sperm bank.

A teddy bear has to prove that he is human before he can have a baby with the woman he has just married.

Yeah, the easy offended should probably avoid.

Hot Pursuit

Release Date: OUT NOW

Starring: Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara

Why You Should See It:

In 2013, we had Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock. This year, we have Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara.

This is one pairing that we can't wait to see because the two have had their fair share of experience with the comedy genre.

Vergara has carved a niche as the loud and hot-tempered Gloria in Modern Family and Witherspoon has played it sweet in films like Legally Blonde.

Not venturing too far from their established characters, these two are mismatched. And for fans of bickering partners, getting two characters who just can't stand each other is worth a guffaw or three.
