Movie Review: Far From The Madding Crowd
With murder, lust and a wild, feisty heroine, this is one lit flick you wish your teacher made you watch.
Based on Thomas Hardy's 1876 novel, this film adaptation introduces Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), an independent girl who charms the socks off everyone she meets.
Case in point - she has three suitors, humble farmer Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), dashing soldier Troy (Tom Sturridge) and rich older gentleman Boldwood (Michael Sheen). All three actors are ridiculously talented and charming.
We're especially enchanted by Schoenaerts, who is essentially a taller Belgian version of Ryan Gosling.
Mulligan was born to play Bathsheba. We are equally impressed and frustrated by her headstrong ways. Beautifully shot and heart-wrenchingly realistic, this is romance without the fluff.
