Goodbye, Grooveshark. Streaming site shuts for good

If you visit Grooveshark today, you will notice a huge change.

Gone is the regular orange and white design with rows and rows of free music.

In place is a dark background with a message in white text which reads: "Today we are shutting down Grooveshark."

Yes, the streaming site has shut for good.

It closed abruptly on Thursday (April 30) after years of litigation.

The site, an early leader in music streaming, had enraged major labels for letting users upload copyrighted songs.

The message said Grooveshark had reached a settlement with three major record label conglomerates and was ceasing operations immediately.

"We started out nearly 10 years ago with the goal of helping fans share and discover music," the message said.

"But despite best of intentions, we made very serious mistakes. We failed to secure licences from rights holders for the vast amount of music on the service.

"That was wrong. We apologise. Without reservation," it said.
