Jail and caning for Germans who vandalised SMRT train
Two German nationals who last November entered a depot and vandalised an SMRT train were today jailed nine months and given three strokes of the cane.
Andreas Von Knorre, 22, and Elton Hinz, 21, each pleaded guilty to two charges of entering a protected place without authorisation, and one charge of vandalism.
Another charge of entering a protected place without authorisation was taken into consideration.
The court heard that Von Knorre and Hinz first entered SMRT's Bishan Depot on Nov 6, 2014, at about 2.45am.
On Nov 7, they entered the depot again at about 2.20am through the drainage system.
They returned on Nov 8 at about 2.50am through the drainage system and went on to scale a wall to the trains where they took a self-timed photograph.
Using 12 cans of spray paint, they spent about 45 minutes spraying a 10m by 1.8m graffiti on the train.
The men then disposed of the spray cans under some wooden crates near the tracks and left through the drain.
An SMRT train captain discovered the acts of vandalism at about 4.30am and made a police report.
The men were arrested on Nov 22, 2014.
