Woman overcomes fear of going out... only to end up falling into manhole
She had been out of her house only twice in the last 10 years.
On her third time stepping out of her home, Madam Janet Faal, who suffers from agoraphobia, fell into a manhole.
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder where the sufferer perceives certain environments as dangerous.
With her left leg now in a cast, a broken nose and cuts to her face to mark her rare trip outdoors, the 57-year-old grandma declared that she would probably never go out again.
Madam Faal (which is ironically pronounced as 'fall'), who lives in West Sussex in Britain, said she had been getting better after 10 years of suffering from crippling fears when outside the safety of her home.
"It's hard for me to go anywhere, but I was getting better," she said. "Now I'm not so sure."
Last week, she went out with her friend as part of her rehabilitation process, news agency SWNS reported.
But while guiding her friend to park her car, she removed a wooden pallet and stepped into an open manhole.
The pallet smashed her nose, breaking it.
"The next thing I remember was the pain... it was awful," she said.
Her son, a painter and decorator Andy McDonald, 39, said he was livid with that had happened to his mother.
“It’s ruined my mother’s recovery. I can’t believe it. Whoever owns that manhole has something serious to answer for," he said.
