Muis busts Subway halal hoax
Here's one SG50 deal that isn't happening this weekend.
The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) has debunked an online rumour regarding fast food chain Subway.
The council intervened after a fake screenshot showing a tweet from the official @halalSG Twitter account declaring that "Subway in Singapore will be Halal for this weekend" began circulating online.
The screenshot is believed to have been photoshopped.
The @halalSG Twitter account handles queries on halal food certification.
A post on Muis' Facebook page read: "A screenshot informing members of the public that Subway is halal for this weekend is inaccurate.
"Kindly note that we have yet to receive any halal applications from Subway."
It also reminded netizens to visit its website for a list of halal-certified restaurants and to check the authenticity of tweets.
Halal certification by Muis involves checks on an establishment's food preparation process and ingredients used.
@halalSG also posted a notice – sporting the rather nifty #HalalMythBusters hashtag – saying:
