Pasir Ris accident leaves two SMRT staff dead
An accident near Pasir Ris MRT station on Tuesday (March 22) morning has left two SMRT maintenance staff dead.
According to the public transport operator, the incident took place at 11.10am at a servicing point near the station.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted at about 11.11am and arrived on the scene with one fire engine, two firebikes, one Red Rhino, two ambulances and three support vehicles.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement to the media, SMRT's vice-president of corporate information and communication Patrick Nathan said: "At around 11.10 am today, there was an accident involving two SMRT maintenance staff along the track at a servicing point near Pasir Ris station.
"SCDF was immediately activated and they have confirmed that the two SMRT staff have passed away. We convey our deepest condolences to their families and will be providing support to them at this very difficult time.
"We are working with the police to conduct a detailed investigation into this accident."
Train services between Pasir Ris and Tanah Merah ground to a halt, with SMRT providing free bus and shuttle services to ferry commuters to their destination.
The train service had been suspended until close to 2pm.
