Property agent pleads guilty to slashing girlfriend's ex with parang
Unhappy that his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend was a married man, he sought him out to teach him a lesson.
The victim was a renovation contractor, so he pretended to be a customer.
Armed with a parang, property agent Wong Guoliang slashed the unsuspecting man with such force that his intestines spilled out.
His victim was so weak from the attack he could only lie in the carpark, hoping for help to come. Fortunately, he survived the attack.
Wong, now 34, ambushed Mr Fredrick Toh Cheng Chye, now 36, on May 29 last year.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Kong Kuek Foo said Wong was in a relationship with Ms Liao Sihan when he found out that Mr Toh used to date her. The New Paper understands that Wong and Ms Liao have since split up.
On May 28, last year, Wong called Mr Toh, claiming he wanted to engage him for some renovation works.
They agreed to meet at the Hillview Warehouse in Hillview Terrace the next day.
At around 10.30am on May 29, Wong drove to their destination, using his friend's BMW withoutconsent. He did so even though he had been banned from driving in 2008 for eight years due to traffic-related offences.
Mr Toh reached the warehouse at around 11am.
He was waiting for Wong when the latter approached him from a staircase landing wearing a surgical mask and wielding the weapon.
Wong swung the 35cm-long parang towards Mr Toh, slashing him on the left abdomen area and causing his intestines to spill out.
He also injured Mr Toh's right arm, right cheek, left upper back area and right forehead area.
Mr Toh escaped and staggered to a nearby carpark where he lay down and waited for help.
An ambulance rushed him to the National University Hospital.
According to a medical report, more than 20cm of Mr Toh's intestines could not be salvaged and had to be surgically removed.
He was warded for 10 days and given hospitalisation leave from May 29 to July 13 last year.
The police arrested Wong on June 9, the court heard.
Wong pleaded guilty in court yesterday to one count each of voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a weapon, driving a car while under disqualification, driving it without insurance coverage and using the vehicle without the owner's consent.
Six other similar charges involving the car will be taken into consideration during sentencing.
UNPROVOKED
DPP Kong urged District Judge Jasvender Kaur to sentence him to four years' jail with nine strokes of the cane because the attack was premeditated and unprovoked.
Wong's lawyer, Mr Steven Lam, asked the judge to sentence his client to 2½ years' jail with six strokes of the cane.
He said Wong has a personality disorder and has a tendency to indulge in fantasy to cope with stress.
Mr Lam added: "One of the recurring figures (he fantasised about) is 'Michael' whom our client regards as his guardian angel.
"Our client felt he acted on the instructions of Michael, who wanted him to teach Mr Toh a lesson to prevent Mr Toh from causing harm to more women."
The case has been adjourned to May 12 for a medical report on Mr Toh's current condition.
For voluntarily causing grievous hurt with the parang, Wong can be jailed for up to 15 years and fined or caned.
