NDP 2016: Produced by, with and for Singaporeans
After the spectacular show to commemorate Singapore's 50th birthday last year, how will this year's National Day Parade (NDP) compare to its predecessor?
1 NDP LOGO
When the chance to design this year's logo came up, Miss Lim Xin Chelsea, 19, grabbed it because she always wanted to be involved in the ndp.
Her efforts paid off when her design - a geometric heart with the number "51" written in bold brushstrokes - beat some 250 entries.
Miss Lim, who took 10 days to come up with the design, said: "I thought of a heart with four shades of red to represent our diversity, the different races and religions in Singapore, living together in harmony."
The Visual Communications and Media Design student at Singapore Polytechnic won two pairs of tickets to the actual show.
She intends to take her three grandparents, who have never watched the NDP live before, to show her appreciation for them.
"They were part of the pioneer generation who helped build our nation," said Miss Lim.
2 RETURN TO NATIONAL STADIUM
After a decade away, the National Day Parade (NDP) will be back at the National Stadium.
Thanks to its larger seating capacity and because there will be an additional preview show for the public, more Singaporeans can look forward to watching the parade live.
Over the previews and the live show, 275,000 spectators - double that of previous NDPs - will be able to join the celebrations.
3 THEME
This year's theme, "Building our Singapore of Tomorrow", seeks to galvanise and unite Singaporeans in the next chapter of nation-building.
Chairman of the NDP 2016 Executive Committee, Brigadier-General (BG) Kenneth Liow (photo), 46, said: "We wanted a theme that was more futuristic."
He said that this year's NDP is not just about "what" we are celebrating, but also "who" and "why". With this theme, the committee hopes that it will serve as a call to action for Singaporeans to build their future collectively.
4 FUTURISTIC DISPLAYS
Indoor fireworks, 3D projection displays, unmanned technologies such as drones and dynamic aerial performances are just some of the new elements that the NDP will have this year.
Novel technologies will be incorporated, with hopes of giving spectators a refreshing experience. But crowd favourites like the Parade and Ceremony, military tattoo with a precision drill display, State Flag Flypast and Salute to the Nation, performed by five F-16, fighter aircraft will all be retained.
And of course, so will the outdoor fireworks display, a traditional crowd-pleaser.
5 PARTICIPATION IS ENCOURAGED
Those who wish to be more involved in the celebrations will now have more chances to do so.
By penning well wishes for the nation, Singaporeans can be part of a gigantic mosaic to mark the nation's 51st birthday. The mosaic will be displayed in the vicinity of the National Stadium during the preview shows and on National Day.
Details will be released later.
Singaporeans are also encouraged to provide suggestions for NDP 2016 via NDP's official website and the NDPeeps Facebook page.
BG Liow said: "We do want to make sure that this NDP is produced by Singaporeans, with Singaporeans, for Singaporeans."
