Fake World Cup jerseys worth over S$23,000 seized

World Cup season - and it's time for some off-the-pitch action in Malaysia.

While some traders across the Causeway tried to increase profits by selling fake jerseys featured in the tournament, a dozen of them were not so lucky.

Instead of scoring big, they were caught by the Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Department enforcement officers last month.

All their 1,400 imitation jerseys, worth RM60,000 (S$23,400) were taken away - along with hopes of a big profit.

Fakes at half price

Department director Ayub Abdul Rahman told The Star Online that the traders will face legal action. They will be charged for selling imitation goods bearing trademarks of well-known sporting companies.

The fakes are sold for half the price of originals, which can cost  RM100 (S$39) each.

The apparel, including jerseys for World Cup 2014 finalists Germany and Argentina, were confiscated at night markets and Ramadan bazaars.

Mr Ayub said the department will continue monitoring the situation closely.
