Vasantham apologises for airing movie that disses Singaporean women
Local Tamil language channel Vasantham has apologised for airing a movie on National Day with dialogue that angered Singaporeans.
The film, Kan Pesum Varthaigal (which translates to Words that the Eyes Speak), is a 2013 Tamil film directed by R. Balaji.
One scene in the film came across as derogatory, specifically to Singaporean women, with two characters talking about how local women are "easy to woo", as compared to Indian women.
Vasantham posted this apology on Aug 9:
Here are the lines of dialogue that got viewers up in arms (screengrabs taken from a video of the scene circulating on Facebook):
1. "We will definitely become Singaporean citizens if we marry a Singaporean girl."
2. By marrying a Singaporean girl, an Indian national can kill "two birds with one stone".
3. "It is easy to woo Singaporean girls."
4. "Indian girls like to go to the temple. Singaporean girls like to go to parties and clubs."
5. "Indian girls like flowers and adorning the holy saffron. Here, they like lipstick and perfume."
