Five men from Mobile Air arrested for cheating
Police have arrested five men for a series of cheating cases at now-defunct Mobile Air.
The suspects are aged between 31 and 38.
The authorities received several reports against the Sim Lim Square mobile phone shop last year for dishonest sales practices.
Customers were allegedly coerced into buying mobile phones and in-house warranties at inflated prices.
The victims paid much higher prices for the mobile phones or had to fork out money to cancel the deal.
To be charged in court
Officers carried out extensive follow-up investigations and interviews with a number of witnesses and victims, stated a police press release on Wednesday (May 27).
In consultation with the Attorney-General's Chambers, the police will be charging the men in court on Friday (May 29).
The New Paper understands that Mobile Air's owner, Mr Jover Chew, who is in his early 30s, is among the five arrested.
Mobile Air and Mr Chew, in particular, gained infamy last November after a video of a Vietnamese tourist begging for a refund at the shop went viral in Singapore and overseas.
In the days after, the unfair sales tactics of several shops at Sim Lim Square came under fire.
The management of the mall recently passed a by-law which gives it the authority to install closed-circuit television cameras, an audio recording device and stickers in the common areas in front of shops that have had many complaints made against them, reported The Straits Times.
The measure is the latest step in ongoing efforts to rein in errant retailers at the Rochor Canal Road mall which has been dogged by a poor reputation over the years.
