Sponsor of scandal-hit NUS orientation camp drops out
The fallout at the National University of Singapore (NUS) continues following a scandal involving its orientation camps.
The New Paper has learnt that a sponsor will no longer work with the NUS Students' Union for future events, while another is reviewing the situation.
This came after TNP's report about first-year students having to perform simulated rape scenes and sing songs which denigrated women during these camps.
Wrap & Roll, a Vietnamese restaurant chain, sponsored about $6,000 worth of food for this year's camp.
Its spokesman said the company was shocked to discover that such activities were happening, and will no longer work with the union.
"Following this, we will no longer be sponsoring them for future activities. This is not a good image, and the organisers went too far," said the spokesman.
"There was no reason for them to cross the line, and we do not want to be associated with them."
A spokesman for another sponsor, Saint Games, said they would be observing the situation and reviewing sponsorship.
"We do conduct reviews from time to time. But we have never touched the programmes," said the spokesman.
"We will be observing the situation."
It is not known how much or what they sponsored.
DBS Bank, listed as a strategic partner of the NUS Students' Union, told TNP that they have taken note of the recent allegations, and are monitoring the situation closely.
Other sponsors of the camp include Brand's, known for their essence of chicken.
