Man charged with cheating iPhone buyers
He allegedly convinced 12 people that he would sell them iPhone 7s.
Between Sept 11 and 16, Cai Jiaxiang, 30, allegedly induced them to transfer cash totalling $9,640 to his bank accounts even though he had no intention of selling them the phones.
Cai was charged in court yesterday with 13 counts of cheating. He is also accused of one count of giving false information to a police officer on Sept 18.
Cai allegedly started his crime spree on Sept 11, when he told one Mr Loh Jun Wei that he would sell him a 128-gigabyte iPhone 7 Plus for $1,450.
Mr Loh then allegedly transferred $100 to Cai's bank account.
According to court papers, Cai targeted 11 other people after that, and each of them allegedly transferred between $100 and $4,610 into his bank accounts.
He allegedly gave false information to the policeman at Toa Payoh Neighbourhood Police Centre at around 11.30pm on Sept 18.
Cai was offered a bail of $20,000 and will be back in court on Oct 11.
For each count of cheating, he can be jailed up to 10 years and fined.
For lying to the policeman, he can be jailed up a year and fined up to $5,000.
