Miss Universe Singapore 2016 - Shona Woo
Shona, who is passionate about education, was a part-time private tutor a few years ago.
During her second year as a chemistry undergraduate at Nanyang Technological University, she visited a village school in Cambodia to teach English.
She said: "It was one of the most humbling and enriching life experiences I have had. I saw for myself how precious education is to the children, and the extent they would go to just to learn more."
What is one cause you would champion if you become Miss Universe Singapore 2016?
I would champion the anti-bullying cause. In this day and age when bullying is rampant, whether offline or online, I want to let fellow victims know that we will never walk alone in this. We can only grow stronger and more confident when we encounter such hurdles.
Which influential living person would you like to meet?
(Chinese business magnate and founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group) Jack Ma, as I really admire his strength to overcome challenges in life to get to where he is today.
I would ask him, "What is one thing you say to yourself when you face rejection or failure?"
What is one food you cannot resist and why?
I love roti prata. When I was a child, I ate my prata with curry and sugar. Eating it brings back lots of fond memories.
Why was the trip to Cambodia fulfilling for you?
I showered with buckets of water from the river and taught in classrooms with no electricity. I came back feeling so grateful for the education system we have in Singapore, and felt even more spurred to pay it forward.
What is it about coding that attracts you?
I like the simplicity behind the complex nature of coding. It is like learning an entirely new language that is only comprehensible to computers and machines.
