Bowlers Bernice and Cherie win in America
Singapore's women bowlers found double joy in the United States yesterday morning (Singapore time), delivering two gold medals in two separate tournaments.
Bernice Lim found form when it mattered, defeating top seed Sandra Andersson of Sweden 248-223 in the title match at the Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) USBC Queens at The Orleans Bowling Centre in Las Vegas.
Fellow Singaporean Cherie Tan, 27, also did the nation proud in the Sacramento Open, edging out American Shannon Pluhowsky for a 208-205 victory to pocket US$10,000 ($13,750) in winnings.
It was sweet revenge for Lim, 24, who bagged US$20,000 ($27,500) in prize money from a championship match which was broadcast live on CBS Sports in the US.
During the final winners' bracket match, Andersson had beaten her 712-646 to earn the top seed for the step-ladder final.
"I'm very happy to have won and I'm honoured to do the country proud by being the first Singaporean to bring the Queens' title back home," said the 2015 SEA Games trios gold medallist.
SUPPORT
"Big thanks to Storm for providing us with the best equipment and support any bowler could ever have.
"I also need to thank Canon, Dynasty Travel, Singapore Airlines, SSI and Singapore Bowling for all the support they've given me and the team."
Lim seized her chance when Andersson started with an open first frame, by bagging six consecutive strikes to blow her opponent away.
Said Jessie Phua, president of the Singapore Bowling Federation: "My feelings are simply summed up in one word - awesome.
"We are of course over the moon with Bernice's crowning as well as Cherie's win, but we are also extremely proud of all the girls.
"All seven made the cut, every single member of that team flew Singapore's flag high and proud."
