Shooter and sprinter win The New Paper School Sports Star Award 2015
Shooter Wong Han Xuan of National Junior College and sprinter Diane Hilary Pragasam of the Singapore Sports School triumphed in their respective categories in The New Paper School Sports Star Award 2015, presented by H-TWO-O, today (Nov 16).
Boys' winner Han Xuan, 18, who finished third in the junior category of the 38th Southeast Asia Shooting Championships last December, is a role model who puts team before self.
He and two friends are working on a project to build an electronic shooting target board for the school's shooting team, who has been using paper targets at the range as they felt that electronic targets were too expensive.
Girls' winner Diane, 14, finished this year’s National Inter School Track and Field Championships as the most bemedalled athlete, with four gold medals.
Both of them each received a trophy, a certificate and a cheque for $3,000.
Eight other finalists nominated in the top 10 received a trophy, a certificate and $500 each.
In the S Soocelaraj Award presented by Soilbuild Group, which honours outstanding teacher-coaches, Joel Vinson of First Toa Payoh Primary School clinched top honours to take home a cheque for $3,000.

Zareen Shariff, 41, the subject head of Malay language and football coach at Loyang Primary School, came in third to win $1,000.
The New Paper School Sports Star Award was launched in 2011 to recognise the best student-athletes in the local school sports scene.
A year later, The New Paper started the S Soocelaraj Award to honour the teacher-coaches.
