Bowler Shayna strikes for first title of the year
National bowler beats teammate Cherie to win in China
World champion and national bowler Shayna Ng clinched her first title of the year yesterday when she won the China International Open women's open step-ladder final in Shanghai.
The 27-year-old beat teammate Cherie Tan 223-205 for the trophy and the 30,000 yuan ($6,200) cheque.
"I think I had a pretty good year. I had very consistent showings at all the PWBA (Professional Women's Bowling Association) stops, but just didn't execute well enough to win," said Ng, who won gold in the All Events in the Women's World Bowling Championships in Abu Dhabi last December.
"But I guess hard work plus a little bit of luck helped me in this tournament.
"Going into the final against Cherie was never an easy feat.
"It was anybody's game and we both bowled great. I'm just thankful I finished well.
HOPE
"Of course, I hope to get selected for the World Singles Championships in December, but that is all up to the coaches to decide.
"At the end of the day, I always feel that my only opponent is myself. I will always do my best regardless of whether the competition is a world championship or a small-scale tournament."
Ng's six-game total of 1,295 pinfalls during the qualifiers was good enough for her to progress to the six-woman step-ladder final as the top seed.
Tan qualified as the third seed with 1,264 pinfalls. With a score of 199 pinfalls, she then beat Indonesia's Tannya Roumimper (194) and Sharon Limansantoso (167) in the semi-finals to guarantee a Singaporean one-two.
Shanghai will also play host to the QubicaAMF World Cup from tomorrow to Oct 23. Singapore will be represented by Norman Cai and Bernice Lim in the men's and women's events, respectively.
The World Singles Championships will be held in Doha, Qatar, in December.
