Movie Review: Long Long Time Ago (PG13)
My fellow Singaporeans, please watch Jack Neo's new film with your grandparents.
Nostalgic and heartfelt, it is a tender, fitting paean to our hardworking pioneer generation.
Set in a local kampung in the late 1960s, the story follows widow Zhao Di (Aileen Tan) as she struggles to provide for her children during a time when gangsters ran amok and heavy floods destroyed homes.
Her good-for-nothing gambler brother Ah Kun (Mark Lee) gives her a constant headache, while racial riots threaten her friendship with her friend Osman (Suhaimi Yusof).
Director Neo takes us on a beautiful walk down memory lane. Unlike some of his previous movies, there is no over-sentimentality in this one, which is great.
Rating: 4/5
