WATCH: The hoverboard is no longer fiction
Technological advancement is soaring to new heights (okay, I exaggerate) thanks to Jill and Greg Henderson.
Thanks to a Kickstarter campaign, the Californian couple, creators of the Hendo Hoverboard, hope to get developers for their hover technology by July next year.
A hoverboard is a levitating transportation gadget that is similar to a skateboard in appearance.
Older folks may remember that famous scene in Back to the Future 2 where Michael J Fox uses one to get around. (You can watch the clip above for a refresher.)
Testing out the hoverboard, a writer from GigaOM, a blog-related media company, said that it felt like "standing on a giant air hockey puck hovering three quarters of an inch above the ground".
But there's a condition that comes with using the hoverboard - it can only work over non-ferrous metal surfaces like brass and aluminium, so yes, you can't use it at skateboard parks.
Also, there's a problem with its steering, reported by Mashable citing Engadget.
Hendo admitted that it would take "a little more time and resources" to perfect the hoverboard.
Regardless of it's limitations, the hover technology, consisting of battery cells and magnetic fields created from hover engines, could come useful in other forms of application.
The Hendo Hoverboards could be available as soon as October next year if the Kickstarter reaches its funding goal of US$250,000 (S$312,000) by its Dec 15 deadline.
