Emotional scenes as students return

This article is more than 12 months old

It was perhaps the longest 30 hours for anxious parents of the 19 pupils from Tanjong Katong Primary School.

The students had been at Mount Kinabalu on an overseas learning journey when they were caught in an earthquake in Kota Kinabalu early Friday morning.

At 3.45pm on Saturday (June 6), the students and their parents let out cries of joy and relief as they were reunited in the private holding room at Changi Airport Terminal 2.

Mr Hafiz Ahmad, 43, paced the private holding room on the third level at Changi Airport Terminal 2 nervously as he waited for his niece Amal Ashley Lim .

Forty others were also waiting nearby. Some were staff from other schools.

One student had his leg in a cast and was in a wheelchair.

Through gaps between the frosted glass panels guarding the room, crying 12-year-olds were seen running into the open arms of waiting parents and grandparents.

Fathers were seen sobbing quietly, relieved their children were home.
