Two men rescued after horrific crash in Mandai
3 injured in Mandai Avenue accident
Two men were trapped in their vehicles and had to be rescued after a horrific crash involving a car, a lorry and a motorcycle during evening rush hour yesterday.
One of the three victims, who were taken to hospital, is said to be fighting for his life.
The accident occurred at Mandai Avenue heading towards Sembawang Road and brought traffic to a crawl for 2km, stretching back to Mandai Road.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the accident at 5.55pm and sent a fire engine, a Red Rhino, two ambulances and a support vehicle to the scene.
When the rescuers arrived, they found a man trapped in the car and another trapped in the lorry. Both were in their 40s.
The men were rescued by SCDF officers using hydraulic tools.
It took about 10 minutes to free the car driver and about 25 minutes to rescue the truck driver, an SCDF spokesman said.
The two drivers and the motorcyclist, aged 28, were taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in two ambulances.
ON STANDBY
The hospital was alerted to be on standby to receive one of the victims, believed to be the car driver, who had life-threatening injuries.
When The New Paper arrived at the scene at about 7pm, the victims had been taken away.
The driver's side of the black Mercedes Benz car was mangled and the driver's air bag had been deployed. In the rear passenger seat were a stuffed soft toy and a child's booster seat.
The lorry's windscreen was shattered and its front portion crumpled. The driver's door had been removed.
At the back of the lorry were Styrofoam boxes. They are believed to have been used to transport seafood.
Three trees on the central divider, about 30m from the damaged vehicles, had been knocked down, leaving debris along the road.
The motorcycle was seen on its side near the car and lorry.
A friend of the lorry driver, who declined to be identified, said he was nearby when he received a call from his friend.
He said in Mandarin: "I was stuck in the jam and stopped by to check on the accident."
He was later heard reassuring someone on his mobile phone that the lorry driver was not badly injured.
Another man, who also declined to be named, said the lorry was on its way to deliver seafood.
The police are investigating the accident.
