Choa Chu Kang murder: Mum watches in horror as son stabs his brother
Recent poly graduate arrested for allegedly stabbing older brother to death
Neighbours would sometimes hear loud arguments in the Choa Chu Kang condominium unit. On Monday night, things got so out of hand that one brother ended up dead and another was arrested for his murder.
The horrific attack, where the youngest son allegedly stabbed his older brother repeatedly with a knife, was witnessed by their mother.
When she could not stop the attack, she tried to staunch the massive bleeding from her son's neck, but to no avail.
Mr Morris Ng Yao Cheng, 26, a motion graphics designer, was pronounced dead by paramedics at 11.16pm.
His younger brother, Ng Yao Wei, 21, was arrested for murder and taken into police custody. They have an older brother.
The police were called to the Ngs' home in the Windemere condominium at Choa Chu Kang Street 64 at about 11pm.
They found Mr Morris Ng lying unconscious in a bedroom in the first-storey unit with multiple wounds, mostly around his face and neck area.
Ng Yao Wei is believed to have also sustained injuries during the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment.
It is believed he did not put up a struggle during the arrest.
The New Paper understands that the police have retrieved a knife, believed to be the murder weapon, at the scene.
When TNP arrived at the condominium just after midnight yesterday, several police vehicles and an ambulance were parked around the block where the Ngs lived. Officers were seen moving in and out of the Ngs' three-bedroom unit.
Property records show the unit belongs to Mr Ng Soon Guan and Madam Gan Chai Min, the parents of the victim and the suspect.
Shin Min Daily News reported that when Madam Gan failed to stop the attack, she rushed to Mr Morris Ng, who was lying on a bed, to try to stop the bleeding from the neck wounds.
LOUD CRIES
Around the time of the incident, neighbours reported hearing loud crying coming from the unit, sounding like that of a woman's, Shin Min added.
The family's domestic helper, who was home during the incident, ran about 150m up a hill to the condominium guardhouse to seek help.
Mr Ng Soon Guan was believed to have been out at the time.
When he returned and found out what had happened, neighbours said they saw him walk from the unit to a garden in the condominium estate where he crouched and sobbed loudly.
Shin Min reported that while the family seemed pleasant, they did not usually speak to neighbours.
Neighbours said they would hear loud arguments in the apartment, with the most recent incident taking place a few months ago and lasting nearly 10 minutes.
Business records show that Mr Ng Soon Guan ran a series of companies, including a beauty salon and a photo studio that have since shut down.
Madam Gan owns a hair salon at Toh Yi Drive where she is a hairstylist. Her husband's photo studio used to be next door.
Mr Morris Ng had a website for his motion graphics portfolio, where he displayed samples of his work, mostly opening credits and promotional content for several cable channels.
Since 2013, he has been based in Taipei, where he worked for Fox International Channels creating promotional content for channels like National Geographic, Star World, BBC Knowledge and Fox.
His Instagram account showed a man who had a passion for Taiwan, often posting pictures of life in the country. Most of his pictures had captions in traditional Chinese.
A picture dated Nov 1, 2014, shows the family having dinner at a restaurant in Marina Bay Sands to celebrate Madam Gan's birthday.
Ng Yao Wei recently graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a diploma in business information technology.
In 2013, during his second year, he won a place in a programme by the Infocomm Development Authority where students were offered mentorships and internships in the infocomm industry.
He was also a big gaming fan, but had got into trouble with the law for illegal downloads some years ago, and his computer was confiscated by the authorities, Shin Min said.
A police spokesman said they have classified the case as murder and investigations are ongoing.
She would cut sons' hair at her salon
When The New Paper went to Gan Salon at 19, Toh Yi Drive, in Upper Bukit Timah yesterday evening, only one staff member was around.
Identifying herself as Ms Shan, she confirmed the salon's owner as Madam Gan Chai Min, the mother of the brothers in the Choa Chu Kang murder case.
She said she had wondered why Madam Gan had not shown up for work all day. She had also not been able to contact her on her mobile phone.
She found out about Monday night's incident only when reporters showed up at the salon.
"All three of Madam Gan's sons come here to cut their hair. Her second son (Mr Morris Ng, who was killed, allegedly by his younger brother Ng Yao Wei) was very friendly, always saying hello to us," Ms Shan said in Mandarin.
Ms Shan said Mr Morris Ng usually visited the salon alone while his brother often showed up with a group of friends. Madam Gan was the only one who cut her sons' hair, she added.
Ms Shan, who has worked at the salon for six years, said Madam Gan's husband, Mr Ng Soon Guan, used to run a photo developing shop next door to the hair salon.
But two to three years ago, the shop was rented out to a dental clinic.
