Man jailed 1 week for injuring fellow worker with forklift
An unaccredited forklift driver was jailed one week for injuring a fellow worker with a forklift on Thursday (June 18).
Theenatayalan Ahumoolam, 27, a Malaysian national, had hopped into the forklift on May 29, 2014, as he wanted to help fellow workers clear some wooden pallets that were lying in the loading and unloading bay of Amtech Building.
But after doing so, he engaged the wrong gear and reversed into a fellow worker, Mr Yong, pinning him against a pillar.
Theenatayalan tried to drive the forklift forward but somehow reversed into the victim again.
Mr Yong was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where he underwent many rounds of surgery.
As of November 2014, his medical bills amounted to almost $47,000.
Today, Mr Yong cannot stand or even sit for long periods. He has to use a colostomy bag and still experiences pain in his pelvis, said his sister.
The court heard that Theenatayalan did not have the requisite training accredited by the Ministry of Manpower to drive a forklift.
